Dr. Jeffrey Stephens

Superintendent, DeKalb County Eastern C.S.D.

My first job in education was as teacher assistance in Huntington, Indiana.  After earning a degree in Criminal Justice from Indiana University, I transferred to Manchester College and finished a degree in Elementary Education.  I was then employed as an elementary teacher in Huntington and served in that capacity for four years.  After earning a Master’s Degree in School Administration I was hired by Dekalb County Eastern CSD.

I was initially employed in 1983 as the Riverdale Elementary Principal.  After completing my Doctorate in School Administration through Ball State University in 1990, the school board created the position of Assistant Superintendent and selected me to work in that capacity.  In 1997, the board chose me to become the Superintendent following the retirement of Dr. Charles P. Hampel.

Since assuming this position, the demands placed on education have been intensive and our school district has responded.  The corporation has meet AYP status annually since 2003.  Every school building has been either replaced or thoroughly remodeled.  We have created cash reserves and/or operating balances in all funds while creating one of the lowest tax rates in the region.   In addition, we have the honor and privilege of serving as the LEA for the Northeast Indiana Special Education Cooperative, Four County Area Vocational Center and the Northeast Indiana School Insurance Consortium.
