- Dekalb Eastern School Board
Director, Northeast Indiana Special Education Cooperative
My interest in Special Education developed as a child growing up in the 60’s and 70’s with a younger sister with Down Syndrome. Because of this, I have had the opportunity to witness the evolution of Special Education. I am very proud of the fact that in this country, we educate ALL students. I now assist my sister through the maze of Medicaid, Medicaid Waiver, and Social Security.
I have a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Special Education. I also have a Post-Graduate Certification in Special Education Administration. All earned at Indiana University, Bloomington. I have taught students ages Pre-K through High School in the areas of Mild, Moderate and Severe Cognitive Disabilities. I have taught students with Physical Disabilities, Specific Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disabilities and Autism.
I taught for a few years in Carmel, Indiana before moving to Columbus, Indiana where we lived for over 20 years. I was a full-time mom for 7 years and taught preschool where my daughter and son were attending. Once my children were in school full time, I returned to the classroom where I taught and served as a consultant for students with Emotional Disabilities for Jennings County Schools.
My husband and I moved to Northeast Indiana in 2004 when I accepted the position with NEISEC as Assistant Director. I served in that capacity for Steuben and DeKalb counties until being appointed Executive Director of NEISEC in 2008. I am very proud of the exceptional programs our Co-op has to offer for students. I am also proud to lead an outstanding group of teachers and professional staff who are enhancing the futures of Northeast Indiana students with special needs. Despite an ever-increasing demand from the State and Federal level, our teachers and professional staff remain focused on the needs of the students they serve.
I live with my husband of 35 years. Our daughter is an architect and lives in Orlando with her husband and baby daughter. Our son lives in Atlanta and is a policy analyst for the CDC.
